Description:
The Resurrection New Jerusalem Monastery is a stavropegial male monastery.
This is the favorite abode of its founder, Patriarch Nikon. The monastery was founded by him in 1656 and, according to Nikon, was to become an analogue of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Construction was completed in 1685. The heart of the monastery is the Resurrection Cathedral - a unique monument of Russian architecture. The cathedral in plan corresponds to the measurements of the Jerusalem temple, given in the Proskinitaria by Hieromonk Arseny. The layout of individual premises was also repeated.
However, the Resurrection Cathedral did not become an exact copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Nikon ordered to decorate the cathedral in accordance with the high dignity of the Russian Patriarchate and the tastes of his time. The decoration of the New Jerusalem Cathedral consisted of multi-colored tiles, of which entire iconostases are composed in the interior, and from the outside - casings, portals, completing the walls of the belt-cornice.
