Historical, architectural and art museum "Ivangorod fortress"
About the company:
The museum complex of Ivangorod consists of three objects:
- fortress - a monument of architecture of XV-XVI centuries;
- art gallery;
Museum of military-defensive architecture.
Opening hours of the museum: 10.00 - 18.00, weekends - Monday, Tuesday.
The fortress was built in 1492 on the Narov River (opposite the German fortress of Narva) and named after Ivan III Ivangorod. It became an outpost on the border with Livonia. In 1496, the fortress was repaired and from the east another, much larger fortress was added to it, which later received the name of the Big Boy Town. In 1507, the space around Ivangorod was surrounded by walls and towers, thus creating a “fortress in a fortress”. The last stage of the expansion of the fortress was the construction to the north of the Great Fire Town of the so-called Fore Town at the beginning of the XVII century.
During the Great Patriotic War, most of the towers of the Ivangorod fortress were blown up. Currently, its restoration continues: some towers and walls, St. Nicholas and Uspenskaya churches inside the fortress have been restored. Services are held in temples.
