About the company:

The museum collection is based on the collections collected by the Ivanovo-Ascension manufacturer, philanthropist and honorary citizen of Ivanovo - Dmitry Gennadyevich Burylin (1852-1924). Part of the collection - numismatics and books - went to D.G. Burylin from his grandfather D.A. Burylin. Subsequently, keen on collecting antiquities, D.G. Burylin significantly expanded the collection. It included a variety of collections: books, porcelain, painting, weapons, numismatics, furniture, DPI items and much more. The chronological framework of the collection - from antiquity to the beginning of the XX century. To replenish his collections, D.G. Burylin traveled a lot in Russia, Europe and the East. The collection of Bibles and the Masonic collection were recognized by contemporaries as the best in Russia. D.G. Burylin exhibited his collections at exhibitions in Russia and abroad, where he was repeatedly awarded diplomas. In 1914, the construction of the museum building was completed, which housed part of the collections, as well as a branch of the St. Petersburg Drawing School of Baron Stieglitz. After the revolution of 1917, D.G. Burylin could not leave the work of his life and asked the authorities to leave it at the museum. After the death of D.G. Burylin, part of the collection was lost, part was transferred to museums of other cities, and part was sold. In 1930, a collection of surg and mastic prints (about 1500 items) was transferred to the Hermitage from the Ivanovo Museum; part of the Masonic collection was sold, part was transferred to the Hermitage and the Museum of Oriental Art (Moscow); the collection of Greece and Rome was transferred to the Museum of Crimea. In 1958, on the basis of the Order of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR “On the Organization of the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum”, more than 13,000 objects, almost all paintings, sculptures, objects of decorative and applied art were transferred from the museum funds. From 1919 to 1990 the museum had the status of local history, so most of the collections of D. G. Burylin were in the funds. In 2002, its original name was returned to the museum. The museum presented the first exhibition “Art and Time” to the residents of the city after a long renovation in 2003. In the following years, other expositions were opened based on the collections collected by D.G. Burylin, which are still in operation today. Most of the collections on display in the museum are on display for the first time since 1917.
