Kaliningrad

Amalienau through the eyes of Soviet settlers

Description:

Want to know who were the first tram drivers, launched in 1946 in post-war Kaliningrad?

What struck the first settlers in the city the most?

Why are there so many kindergartens on the modern street of Kutuzov and its adjacent streets?

Then you're on this tour!

The postwar years in the history of the Kaliningrad region are a unique time when people from all over the former Soviet Union met in the same territory and for 2.5 years lived together side by side with representatives of the people with whom the bloodiest war in history has just ended. The area of Kutuzov Street, formerly Amalienau, was built in the early XX century according to the advanced project of the garden city and, unlike the rest of the city, suffered little during the war.

In the post-war history of the city, it became for some time the center where the first governing bodies, shops, where the military and political elite lived. There lived ordinary immigrants with an unusual fate.

The history of this area is closely related to the lives of these people, including my relatives. In the former district of Amalienau passed the youth of my mother and I from childhood listened to stories about Kutuzov street and the house on Marina Raskova street, the former villa of Schmidt. My relatives did not live here much time in the fifties - early sixties, but this time left very vivid memories, and the people with whom they lived here became friends for life. Many of the first settlers still live here, and plants planted more than 100 years ago have become natural monuments.
