In the wake of the Amber Room
Description:
Our investigation will take place in the districts of Koenigsberg-Kaliningrad and in Amber (formerly Palmniken). History, architecture, the most interesting sights.
The search for the Amber Room is covered with legends and myths, but the probability of finding this precious royal gift in the Kaliningrad region is very high.
In 1716, the “amber cabinet” was presented by the King of Prussia as a gift to the Russian Emperor Peter I, who loved such original things.
The gift on 18 carts was sent to St. Petersburg, where it was received by Alexander Danilovich Menshikov. When checking the cargo, it turned out that many details were missing. As a result, under Peter, the “amber cabinet” in Russia was not assembled.
The daughter of Peter, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, decided to use the panel to decorate one of the rooms of the Winter Palace. In 1743, these works were entrusted to the master Alexander Martelli, the general leadership went to the Ober-architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. By 1746, the Amber Room was assembled and for nine years served as a place for official receptions. Then the Empress ordered to move the room to the Great Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo.
The Great Patriotic War began. The Germans occupied the city of Pushkin and managed to dismantle the Amber Room and take it to Koenigsberg, where it pleased the eyes of visitors to Koenigsberg Castle.
I invite you to conduct your own investigation based on historical facts and versions of the direct participants in the Amber Room case.
