Struggling Bison Sculpture
Description:
“Fighting bison” is a famous sculptural composition in Kaliningrad by the German sculptor August Gaul, installed in 1912 in Koenigsberg (now Kaliningrad). The monument was presented to the city by the Ministry of Culture of Prussia.
The sculpture depicts two adult male bison cast in life-size bronze. Animals fight on a meter pedestal, from two shells at the bottom of which to the pool in front of the sculpture flow jets of water.
Animals look very naturalistic, the author created them on the basis of long observation of this species. To achieve maximum similarity to August Gaul helped the advice of Pablo Picasso.
Since the sculpture was installed near the courthouse, the residents of the city called it “Prosecutor and Defender”, alluding to their eternal confrontation in court proceedings.
The sculpture was transferred, but now it pleases the guests of the city in its original place - on Mira Avenue, 1. Getting there is easy by bus (3.12), tram (5), shuttle taxis (61,63,72,74,82,92).
