Herman Brachert House Museum

ooh Tokareva, 7, Svetlogorsk, Kaliningrad region, 238561

About the company:

The house-museum dedicated to the life and work of Hermann Brachert (1890-1972), one of the leading German sculptors of the first half of the twentieth century, was opened in 1993 in the village of Otradnoye, Svetlogorsk city district (in the former Georgenswald).

The museum is located in a picturesque location on the Baltic Sea in the once country house of the Brachert family, where the sculptor lived and worked for eleven years (from 1933 to 1944).

The small country house became for the master, persecuted by the Nazi authorities, both a refuge and a place of creativity. The artist created more than 20 monumental sculptures that adorned Koenigsberg and the province, a number of portraits, original copper engravings, a large number of medals made of bronze, completed works made of amber.

Herman Brachert was characterized by a subtle sense of the material, its expressive capabilities, decorative qualities. Brachert is a master of beautiful forms, sophistication, elegance, sometimes fragility and melancholy. His work is reserved and noble. But, no matter what the hand of the master touched, the main, beloved theme has always remained a person – the absolute measure of plastic art.

For many years, information about the life of the sculptor was collected in the museum, his works were purchased. The museum has more than 750 storage units. These are mostly documents, letters and photographs from the artist’s family archive. The jewel of the collection is the authentic works of the sculptor, revealing all the facets of his talent. The museum’s collection is unique because much of Hermann Brachert’s artistic heritage was lost during the war and post-war years. Interest is both small plastic and large monumental sculpture.

The main exhibit, of course, is the sculpture “Bringing Water” (1940), which was transferred to the museum from the Listic Park of Svetlogorsk in 2002. The work was in a depressing state. Its masters from the State Hermitage Museum, headed by the leading artist-restorer V.N. Mozgovoi, were restored. Elegance, sophistication and smoothness of the lines strikes a large marble bas-relief “Morning Dawn” (1940). “It looks like it was made with a pen, not a cutter,” said one visitor. The exhibition presents portraits created by Hermann Brachert in different years.

In 2015, the funds were replenished with a valuable exhibit. Kaliningrad philanthropist donated to the museum the first casting of the famous sculpture of the master “Demeter” (1940). Previously, a copy of this work was kept in the museum.

The interior of the house is captured in family photos made by the wife of the sculptor Maria Brachert, the leading photographer of Koenigsberg.

The museum is not just a “receptor of the muses”, which preserves the spirit of the past, but also a constantly evolving space. The Herman Brachert House Museum is no exception. Group and individual excursions, art exhibitions are held here; cognitive and interactive programs, educational actions are implemented; new and creative ideas are formed related to expanding the opportunities of the exposition, replenishing the collection, attracting partners and increasing educational programs.

At the initiative of the museum in Svetlogorsk and Otradny, international scientific and practical conferences “Artist in Time” (1998), “Creativity of G. Brachert in the Context of Modern Culture” (2003), “The Role of Museums of Small Towns in Increasing the Tourist Attraction of the Place” (2006), “Herman and Mia Brachert in the History of Artistic Culture of Königsberg” (2011) were held. As part of the new concept of the museum’s development, in July 2015, a scientific conference “Brahert and Contemporaries” was held. Meeting in 100 years, which was attended by Kaliningrad museums and representatives of the academic elite of Moscow and St. Petersburg. International sculptor symposiums held at the museum in 1998 and 2010 marked the beginning of the collection of modern plastic art. Since 2016, plein airs of sculptors have been held with the participation of Kaliningrad, Moscow and St. Petersburg artists, as well as young talents - students of the V. Surikov Moscow Academic Institute and the Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. The funds are replenished with new remarkable works, including samples of academic sculpture.

The first director of the museum was Alla Semyonovna Sarul (1941-2018). She was the founder of the museum and led it for 20 years, from 1993 to 2013. During this time, a modest small provincial museum became the center of culture of the Svetlogorsk city district, a place of attraction for people of creative professions, they learned about it far beyond the Kaliningrad region.

In 2014, the Herman Brachert House-Museum changed the status of a municipal museum and became a regional cultural institution. The museum was headed by Vladimir Arturovich Chernyaev (1967-2015). Under his leadership, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Kaliningrad region, the building was overhauled and the improvement of the territory began. Vladimir Arturovich is the author of the new concept of the museum “Brahert and Contemporaries”, which determined the ways of its development for many years.

The House-Museum of G. Brachert sees its further mission not only in the preservation of monuments of German culture as part of the universal, historical and cultural heritage and the popularization of the sculptural heritage of the past, but also in the creation of a scientific and practical base of modern sculpture aimed at the establishment of the museum as an international center of sculpture.
