In the footsteps of East Prussia: Kaliningrad Oblast in 9 days. Author's tour"
Description:
The castles of the Teutonic Order, the Curonian Spit and the spirit of old Europe in Russia.
This journey is a time machine. You will find yourself in a unique subject of Russia, where German brick Gothic coexists with Soviet modernism, and the noise of the Baltic can be heard from the sand dunes of the Curonian Spit. Here, every city is a page from a history book, and every castle is a silent witness of the Teutonic Knights. This is not just a tour, this is a deep dive into the mysterious world of the former East Prussia.
I have traveled hundreds of miles on the roads of the region to make this route. It is created for thoughtful travelers who want not only to see the sights, but to feel the spirit of the place where the fates of the two cultures are forever intertwined.
Why the base in Kaliningrad?
We will live in Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg). This is strategically true: from here, as from the center of the web, it is convenient to make radial trips to all corners of the region, returning every evening to the city with a developed infrastructure, restaurants and its unique atmosphere.
Your nine-day journey into the past:
Day 1. In the heart of the area.
Arrival in Kaliningrad. Hotel check-in. The first evening is your time to relax after the road and soak up the special, “European” feel of the Russian city.
Day 2: Kaliningrad: between Kant and Pregolei.
Acquaintance with the capital of the region. Walk through the most soulful place - the Fish Village and the island of Kant with its majestic Cathedral. Rest in the shady South Park and a leisurely walk along the embankment of the Pregolya River, in the waters of which history is reflected.
Day 3. Baltiysk: a sea fortress and the Baltic Spit.
We are going to the westernmost city of Russia.
• Port city: We will walk along the Sea Boulevard past a 33-meter lighthouse, warships and royal swans. Walk through the historic streets of the Artillery and Red Army.
The wonder of nature: Let’s cross over to the unique Baltic Spit – a narrow strip of land between the sea and the bay, a place of incredible energy and peace.
Day 4. Svetlogorsk: resort rhapsody.
Go to the elegant Svetlogorsk (Raushen). The promenade along the sea, climbing the funicular and walking along the ideal streets that keep the spirit of East Prussia: Lenin, Resort, Gagarin. A must-see point is a visit to the House of the Storyteller Hoffman, where fairy tales come to life.
Day 5. Zelenogradsk: cats and resort charm.
Meet Zelenogradsky (Kranz). Queen Louise Square, a long promenade and the main decoration is Resort Avenue with its elegant villas. We will look into St. Adalbert’s Kirch and, of course, talk with the main owners of the city – numerous cats.
Day 6. Soviet and Neman: in the footsteps of queens and knights.
• Sovetsk (Tilzit): Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the city where historical peace treaties were signed. Queen Louise Bridge, Victory Grand Street, the charming Tilsit tram and the elegant Villa Franka.
• Neman (Ragnit): Next is power and tragedy. We inspect the monumental ruins of Ragnit Castle, once a formidable fortress of the Teutonic Order. The contrast will be a quiet park near the Mill Pond.
Day 7. Chernyakhovsk: the legacy of Insterburg.
We are exploring Chernyakhovsk (Insterburg). We explore the formidable ruins of Insterburg Castle, find the elegant Villa Brandes, walk through Lenin Square and historical streets, and also go to the Cathedral of Archangel Michael.
Day 8. Curonian Spit: The Realm of Sand and Silence
All day in the UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Curonian Spit National Park. A day when you will listen to the whispers of the sands and the cries of seagulls.
Day 9. Kaliningrad: Forts and Farewell
On the last day we explore the defensive ring of the city: we visit the well-preserved Fort No. 11 "Denhoff". Then - rest in one of the oldest zoos in Russia. Free time to buy souvenirs (the famous marzipan!) or visit the museum before departure.
Key features of the tour:
• Checked out: This route is the result of my personal trips around the region. I have compiled and completed it myself to offer you not a superficial, but a deep historical tour with an emphasis on the heritage of East Prussia.
Freedom on wheels: We will live in Kaliningrad and explore the area on a rented car. This is the only way to comfortably see all locations, especially remote castles and spit. Not driving? We organize a transfer with a driver or individual excursions.
Your travel, your rules: The route is a great basis for adaptation.
Do you want more sea? We will increase the time in Svetlogorsk and Zelenogradsk, add a beach holiday.
Are you only interested in locks? We will concentrate on Chernyakhovsk, Neman and add Guards (Tapiau).
You can add Amber and observation deck on the quarry or a trip to Bagrationovsk.
What do you get?
Detailed plan with logical moves and all necessary coordinates.
My personal recommendations for authentic cafes with German cuisine and photo spaces.
• Assistance in finding a hotel and renting a car.
• Support during the entire trip.
Cost of the tour:
The final price is formed individually. The main factors: season, hotel level, type of rental car, group composition and your wishes to change the program.
