Church of Cosmas and Damian

Kaluga region, Kaluga, Suvorov str., 177/16

Description:

The Church of Cosma and Damian is a Baroque church in Kaluga, built in 1794.

The church differs in style from the typical architectural buildings of the time, among which classicism prevailed. The church is characteristic of the St. Petersburg building of that era, which allows us to conclude that the church of Kosma and Damian was designed by one of the students of the famous architect Rastrelli. Five figure-shaped towers with domes of coke rush upwards, reminiscent of the contours of the Smolny Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

The church is dedicated to the holy brothers Cosmas and Damian, the silverless, who healed the sick free of charge thanks to the power of God.

However, the main throne is consecrated in honor of the Savior not made with hands, and only the chapel is dedicated to the brothers.

The church was one of the richest in Kaluga. In 1937, the temple was closed and housed temporary prisoners. After World War II, it housed a garage and warehouses.

The church was returned to the Kaluga diocese only on July 17, 1992.
