Cathedral of the Trinity of Life Original

kaluga, Old Torg Square, City Park

Description:

The Cathedral of the Trinity of Life Original is the main cathedral of Kaluga, it is called the “heart” of the city.

The first mention of the temple is found in the Nikon chronicle, which tells that False Dmitry II was buried near the temple in 1610. In 1618, the Zaporozhians burned this temple. Later, a stone temple was erected on the same site, which quickly collapsed.

The construction of the modern cathedral began in 1786 according to the project of the architect I.D. Yasnygin. The construction of the cathedral took a lot of time, the work was completed only in 1811. The cathedral was consecrated for next year. The cathedral immediately became a symbol of victory in the Patriotic War of 1812 for the residents of Kaluga.

The cathedral is built in the style of classicism, it also contains elements of the Byzantine style. The main feature of the cathedral is that it is the first stopless temple in Russia. An unsupported dome with a diameter of twenty meters also became unique at that time. The height of the cathedral reached seventy meters.

The fate of the cathedral after the October Revolution of 1917 was quite difficult. Repeatedly raised the question of the need to blow up the cathedral. The temple lost its famous iconostasis Kazakov, the paintings painted over. During the Second World War, a hospital and a military warehouse were located here.

After much controversy, the cathedral was returned to the Church in 1991.
