Kazan monastery

13/33 Darwin Street, Kaluga

Description:

Kazan Maiden Monastery appeared in the city at the beginning of the reign of Mikhail Fedorovich. Now the monastery annually organizes a procession with the icon of the Kazan Mother of God of the XVII century.

Initially, the monastery did not have its own temple, so services were held in the temple in honor of Elijah the Prophet. In the XV century, a wooden church was attributed to the monastery in honor of the Metropolitan of Moscow, St. Alexis.

The laying of the five-domed cathedral took place in 1899. The temple was consecrated in 1903. Kazan Cathedral with three thrones was built in the Byzantine style.

After the revolution, the monastery was closed, and its buildings were used for various needs.

In 1992, the monastery community resumed its activities. The monastery, unfortunately, has not yet been restored, and the community is located in the house church of St. Guri of Kazan. The Kaluga Theological School and the Orthodox Gymnasium also work here.
