Trinity Cathedral

p. Old Torg, 4, Kaluga, Kaluga region, Russia

Description:

One of the most popular attractions of Kaluga is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, located in the historical center of the city. It was built in 1818 under the guidance of a student of the great architect Vasily Bazhenov - provincial architect Ivan Yasnygin. The architectural uniqueness of the monastery lies in the fact that its huge, seventeen-meter round dome, made in the classical Byzantine style, was built without the use of any internal supports. It is larger than the dome of the famous Kazan Cathedral, located in St. Petersburg, almost 2.5 meters.

The Trinity Cathedral was dedicated to the victory of Russia over Napoleon and illuminated in 1815 by the Kaluga Archbishop. In 1926, the temple was closed, trying to arrange a theater, an observatory, a cinema and even a zoo. In 1929, the House of Defense was located here, and in 1941 the building was significantly damaged by a severe fire. In 1999, it was completely reconstructed and consecrated again in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Kaluga Diocese. Currently, it has two aisles: the Kaluga Icon of the Mother of God, as well as the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. In the temple there is a secluded royal place with the image of the great Mary Magdalene.
