Kaluga

Sign church

znamenskaya street, 2, Kaluga

Description:

The Znamenskaya stone church is the second church in the city with a tent bell tower. Now there is a community of Orthodox Old Believers in the church.

The church was built in 1720 at the expense of merchant Lanin and parishioners. The architecture of the bell tower is much older than the church itself. Externally, the church is decorated simply and concisely: on the bell tower only one tier installed small niches with the heads of stucco angels. Very beautiful icon painting on the wall, which is opposite to the iconostasis. Legend says that icon painting is the work of the court artist of the time Peter the Great.

The iconostasis of the temple is an ancient form, crowned with a crucifix and four figures on the sides. Above the Royal Gate is a carved bas-relief image of the Lord of hosts.
