The exposition of the Tarutin Military Historical Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 (opened on October 18, 1987, in 2012 re-exposition) is dedicated to the famous Tarutin march-maneuver of the Russian army, which stopped the advance of Napoleon’s army to Kaluga and the rich southern provinces of Russia. After a fierce battle, which took place here in October 1812, the village of Tarutino became world famous.

In gratitude for the will of the peasants on their own money (44 thousand rubles), according to the project presented by Rumyantsev, built a monument in Tarutino in honor of the events and victories in the Patriotic War of 1812.

The opening took place on June 24, 1834. In 1854-1855, the monument was rebuilt during repairs according to the project of the architect D. Antonelli. In 1941, on Tarutin land, "defending the Motherland and humanity from fascism, stood to death Soviet soldiers."
