The museum complex was inaugurated on May 8, 1975 on the site of battles of units of the 43rd Army, including cadets of the Podolsk military schools in October 1941.
The idea of its creation belongs to Lieutenant General I.S. Strelbitsky, a participant in the battles. The Kaluga Regional Committee of the Komsomol became the initiator of the implementation of the idea. everywhere in the Kaluga region and in the city Youth Saturdays were held in Podolsk, as a result of which funds were collected. Work was carried out by the Department of Construction of Obninsk. The author of the complex is Honored Architect of the RSFSR, Laureate of the State Prize, Honorary Citizen of Kaluga E.I. Kireev.
The complex covers an area of 2.7 hectares. There are memorial objects: the Mound of Glory, two nearby dots, preserved since 1941, two artillery pieces of the Great Patriotic War, the museum building. On the Mound of Glory there is a monument to the cadets of the Podolsk military schools (the author is the sculptor Y. L. Rychkov), at its foot the Eternal Flame burns.
The exposition of the museum reflects the theme of the feat of cadets of Podolsk military schools on the Ilyinsk line of defense in October 1941. For its creation, the main part of documents, photographs, personal belongings of combatants, remains of weapons and other materials collected at one time by the Red Pathfinders of the Ilyinsk secondary school and transferred from the school museum was used. In the future, the museum funds were replenished with items handed over by veterans of Podolsk military schools and their relatives, as well as found on the battlefield by search team members and local residents. On the outer wall of the building there is a banner with a map and photos of the found pillars of the former defense line.
Every year, on memorable days of fighting, events within the framework of the Red Junkers project are held on the territory of the memorial complex. One such event is military historical reconstruction.
