Chapel of Emperor Alexander II

Russia, Adygea, Maykop, village Novosvobodnaya.

Description:

On the mountain plateau of Mamryuk-Ogoi in Adygea are the ruins of a white-stone ancient chapel. This is a chapel in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander II. During the Caucasian War with the Ottoman Empire in these places there was a significant meeting of Alexander II with representatives of the mountainous Caucasian peoples. The tsar intended to inspect the Russian Cossack troops, but had to take part in a peacekeeping meeting, which had a great role in the Caucasian War.

The chapel is made by hand from local sandstone. Near the chapel was a pedestal and a monument to Alexander II. But now it's all ruined. The chapel itself is a ruin. Above sea level, the chapel rises 64 meters. In connection with the construction of a large road, the route from the Fars River to the chapel of Alexander II should become a promising tourist destination. There are plans to restore the famous chapel completely.
