Church of John Chrysostom

Russia, Arkhangelsk region, Kargopol, Saunino village

Description:

The Church of John Chrysostom is one of the most ancient Orthodox churches located in the Arkhangelsk region. It is located in the village of Saunino, five kilometers from the city of Kargopol. Currently, the church is an architectural monument.

The Church of John Chrysostom was built in 1665. It is a classic example of tent architecture - eight on four. The beauty and uniqueness of such structures lies in the skillfully selected ratio of the quadrangular lower log and the main decoration - the tent itself. The asymmetry of the church creates a fascinating game of volumes, which is fully felt during a circular inspection.

Once inside the church, visitors first enter a small porch from which a low wooden door leads to the refectory. Most likely, the refectory room was built a little later than the church itself, since it only adjoins the main building, and the walls are taken from short logs. From the refectory comes the entrance to the temple. The main feature of tent buildings: they only look so massive, and inside have a rather modest room. Not so long ago, the church was restored and is now in good condition. From the former interior, only a painted ceiling – “sky” – has been preserved.
