St. George's Church "River village"
River Village, Arkhangelsk Region, Russia
Description:
St. George’s Church in the village of River is an ancient Christian Orthodox shrine, which was built in 1899, on the site of a burned old wooden church. Locals call this church simply Egorievskaya. The ancient monument of architecture rises on the hill - it can be seen from all places in the village.
St. George’s Church is located in the village of River, near the Churiega River, northwest of the city of Kargopol, in northern Russia. This is a three-chair church with a beautiful bell tower, designed by the Kargapol technician Herman Yakovlevich Miller. It consists of two halves - the summer with the aisles of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God and the Hieromartyr Vlasius, and the winter with the aisle of the Great Martyr George the Victorious. It was built over two years - from 1897 to 1899. The main part of the project was financed by Burtsev Alexander Evgenyevich, the other part was collected by local residents.
Only in the early 2000s the church was restored, and before that it belonged to the collective farm, as there was a warehouse of grain, gasoline and meat. The first service, after many years, took place on Christmas Day in 2002. In 2004, the altar of the Great Martyr George the Victorious was consecrated there.
