Cathedral of Christ
Arkhangelsk region, Kargopol, Naberezhnaya, 28
Description:
The cathedral in Kargopol was founded in 1552. According to the appearance of the temple, it can be assumed that Novgorod masters were invited for its construction. The temple is a two-story building. On the first floor there was a winter temple, on the second - a more modest summer one. Initially, the summer church was led by grand staircases with richly decorated porches. The first floor of the winter temple for several centuries went into the ground almost a meter. A small chapel of Saints Philip and Alexis was built already in the XVII century. Today, the temple is transferred to the Kargopol Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve.
Previously, the miraculous Kazan icon of the Virgin was kept in the temple, but after a great fire it was moved. Today in the Cathedral of Christ are kept the icon "Christmas Nativity", dating from the middle of the XVI century and the icon "Position of the Rose of the Virgin", dating from the second half of the XVI century.
