Kazan

Sviyazhsk Island

Description:

Excursion to the island-city of Sviyazhsk, where in a record short time in 24 days a fortress was built for the conquest of Kazan and the Kazan Khanate by Ivan the Terrible. In the middle of the XVI century, the Sviyazhsk fortress was larger than the fortresses in Novgorod, Pskov and even Moscow. Preserved on the island of the Trinity Church, in which Ivan the Terrible himself prayed for victory over the Kazan Khan. The Assumption Cathedral in Sviyazhsk was built by the artel of the Pskov architect, who also supervised the construction of the church of Basil the Blessed in Moscow. Of particular value are the frescoes of the XVI century adorning this cathedral, there is also an image of the holy martyr Christopher with a horse’s head. At the end of the 18th century, Emperor Paul I visited Sviyazhsk and in memory of this visit, an exact copy of the booth was installed at the river station, on which the emperor made a trip from Sviyazhsk to Kazan. Perhaps it is about Sviyazhsk that it is written in the "Tale of the Tsar Saltan" by A.S. Pushkin - "...In the light of this is what a miracle: the island lies on the sea, the City on the island stands With golden-domed churches, with towers and gardens ...". Reconstruction of the fortress wall will give you the opportunity to imagine how the city of Sviyazhsk was guarded by the Streltsy and, like the Streltsy, shoot with a bow and crossbow. During the tour you will learn why the locals joke "before spring and autumn in Sviyazhsk no one died", how much it cost to travel from Kazan to Sviyazhsk before the revolution, to find out which items were studied at school in those days, to forge a coin or horseshoe, ride a horse or treat it with carrots, to sculpt a pot on a potter's wheel ... And try the famous Sviyazhsk pancakes, ear and shit.
The territory of Sviyazhsk is a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Wonderful island-city Sviyazhsk is waiting for you, dear guests! Your Rosa Marcelevna.
