Excursion to the island-city Sviyazhsk.
Description:
Sviyazhsk is the center of the birth of Orthodoxy on the territory of the former Kazan Khanate, conquered in October 1552 by Ivan VI (Grozny). This fortress, built in 4 weeks in the heart of the Kazan Khanate, became an outpost of Russian troops during the siege of Kazan in 1552. Over its nearly 500-year history, Sviyazhsk has experienced many events. From a military fortress, the city gradually turned into a district management center, a monastery center. After the revolution, churches and monasteries were closed and desecrated, they housed prisons and correctional institutions. After the construction of the Kuibyshevskaya GRES in 1957, part of the city was flooded and Sviyazhsk turned into a real island, a place of alienation, there was a psychiatric hospital and a boarding school for mentally retarded children. A new life began with the implementation of the program of the Renaissance Foundation in 2010. And on July 9, 2017, by the decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the architectural ensemble of the Sviyazh Assumption Monastery was included in the World Heritage List. Having come to our republic, you should definitely visit this corner of history!
