Then we go to the Makarievsky Monastery on the steep forest bank of the Volga at the miraculous spring, which was consecrated by St. Macarius of Zheltovodsk.
St. Ascension Makariev Monastery is a very bright and secluded place. The steep bank of the Volga (at the place of its merger with Sviyaga). A dense forest on a mountain. And from the mountain to the Volga looks the statue - it is St. Macarius himself who blesses this place.
In the distant XV century, Makariy Zheltovodsky himself walked on this land - as a 90-year-old elder he led Russian people out of captivity of the Kazan Khanate. He walked along this shore and stopped at the source. He loved this place in his heart. He left a spiritual testament to the monastery. That's what happened. In the XVII century, the monk Isaiah found this place and the source - and the Ascension (Makarev) monastery appeared here.
People from all over the Kazan Governorate drew here - after all, it was here that the holy spring was located, as well as the icons of Macarius the Wonderworker, Vatopedi Mother of God and the icons of St. Panteleimon the healer, brought from the holy Mount Athos. And in the years of Soviet power, this tradition did not disappear - there was a children's sanatorium.
In our time, the monastery is reborn. And more and more people, despite the difficult path to it, are eager to visit this place. And now there are new cases of healing.
From the point of view of a non-believer, the monastery is attractive with its picturesque location: the Volga, Sviyaga, forest, steep coast - an interesting view of Sviyazhsk! Stone beach. Best fishing.
You can visit this secluded monastery only in the warm season. In winter it is cut off from the outside world.
