Makarievsky Ascension Monastery
Description:
The only desert monastery in the Kazan diocese is located in an unusually picturesque place - surrounded by a forest, on a natural balcony-terrace at an altitude of about 40 meters above the Sviyazh Bay, opposite Sviyazhsk. Getting to the monastery is not easy, part of the way will have to walk, but what you will see is worth the effort.
The monastery was founded in the 17th century on the site, which in the 15th century indicated the Monk Makariy Zheltovodsky. In the monastery there is his icon and a particle of relics, as well as part of the epitrahili of John of Kronstadt, who served there the liturgy. Right on the shore there is a font, consecrated in the 15th century by St. Macarius of Zheltovodsk. The monastery offers the best view of Sviyazhsk, located opposite.
