Kazan

Monasteries of Kazan, founded by decree of Ivan the Terrible.

Description:

On the excursion, we will visit two monasteries of Kazan, founded by the Decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century - the Holy Dormition Monastery on Zilantov Hill and the Kazan Bogoroditsky Monastery.

Both monasteries have histories related to important events for the Russian state.

  • - the capture of Kazan and the accession of the Kazan Khanate to the Moscow Principality in 1552.
  • The discovery of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in 1579.

These monasteries are now operating and on the excursion we will visit these places, plunge into the aura of Divine grace that lives in these places.

The Assumption Monastery was founded by Tsar Ivan the Terrible after the capture of Kazan and was built on the site where the hiking tent church stood and where Russian soldiers who died under the walls of Kazan were later buried. In 1559, the flood of the river washed away and destroyed the monastery walls, after which the monastery was moved to the top of the mountain. The monastery is surrounded by a stone wall. The neo-official name of the monastery “Zilant” refers to the name of the mountain, on which, according to legend, the mythical creature-winged snake Zilant lived.

The Virgin Monastery is directly connected with the history of the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a ten-year-old girl Matrona, who demanded to find her icon. On the tour you will hear the story of the acquisition of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, which later received the recognized title “Intercessor of the Russian Land”. You will learn about the Appearance of the Mother of God and you will see this holy place with your own eyes.
