Not far from Kazan, up the Volga River, stretches a miracle island. Here in 1551, in just 4 weeks, Russian masters from logs harvested near Uglich and fused along the Volga, a wooden fortress was cut down, which became an outpost of Ivan the Terrible's army before the assault on Kazan. The island-city of Sviyazhsk is interesting because on the territory of the modern museum-reserve there are unique religious monuments of architecture: the Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, the Cathedral of Our Lady of All Sorrowful Joy and the only monument of wooden architecture of the Volga region - the Trinity Church.
