Old Tatar Sloboda: from Catherine to Tukay

The Old Tatar Sloboda is that part of Kazan where you can feel the atmosphere of a real Tatar city, where you can walk only on one street, see several mosques, completely different from each other, where you can find out why the main street of the Sloboda once bore the name of Catherine. There are also rich estates of noble Tatar merchants, and even an “English castle”, the Literary Museum of G. Tukay works here. Here all the streets are named after Tatar poets, writers, scientists and theologians, and only two streets are an exception.
