Description:

The Cathedral of the Annunciation was built in 1552. Tsar of Russia Ivan the Terrible, who captured Kazan, ordered to build a divine temple in honor of this event. He's been rebuilt many times. At first it was a wooden church, then it was made white stone. Complemented with a bell tower, porch and refectory.

Today, the complex of the Annunciation Cathedral includes buildings of the Bishops’ House, Consistory and a number of archaeological monuments. After the fire of 1815, the building was rebuilt. The fire of 1842 required major repairs. At the beginning of Soviet power, the temple was looted by the Red Army, the domes were destroyed, and the entrance to the cathedral was closed, church valuables were looted and destroyed.

The ministers managed to bear only the relics of Saint Guria and a small number of icons. In the 70s, the restoration of the Cathedral of the Annunciation began, but the destroyed bell tower was not restored. It's a square now. The Annunciation Cathedral is included in the sights of the Kazan Kremlin.
