Spasskaya Tower of the Kazan Kremlin
Russia, Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan, St. Kremlin, 8.
Description:
The Spasskaya Tower of the Kazan Kremlin is one of the main architectural landmarks of the 16th century. The tower is located on 1 May Square. It was built by Pskov architects Ivan Shiryai and Postnik Yakovlev. The building has been rebuilt many times.
The name of the monument was in the name of the icon of the Savior Not Made with Hands, which is an exact copy of the banner of Ivan the Terrible. The icon was kept in the church.
Initially, the tower was a square two-tiered building of white stone with a small watchtower and a wooden roof. The jagged walls of the tower, located on either side of it, are made of limestone. In the 17th century, two more tiers were built. The Spasskaya Tower vividly resembles the defensive structure of that time.
On the right side of the tower, an arch is made in the wall, through which transport now passes and there is an exit to Kremlin Street. The entrance to the Kremlin was made here under Ivan the Terrible.
From the railway station of Kazan the distance to the tower is 2 kilometers, you can get on foot or by taxi. It is possible to take the bus to the Central Stadium stop.
