Karl Marx Street

Karl Marx Street stretches in the historical center of Kazan, from the very foot of the Kremlin. It had previously consisted of two parts. The first part was called Pokrovskaya and reached Liberty Square, and the second led in the direction of Arsk and bore the appropriate name. Subsequently, the street was renamed Vozdvizhenskaya. One of the sights of Kazan, located on Vozdvizhenskaya Street, was the building of the Second Gymnasium, as well as the building of the theater on Liberty Square.

The street first appeared on the city map in 1768, but for several decades it remained nameless and received its name only in the 1830s. In 1852, a stone theater was built to replace the wooden one destroyed by fire. In 1919, the building burned down as a result of arson. As it turned out, the fire was arranged by the lamp operator, who decided that he could be fired after conducting gas lighting in the theater. The building of the theater was not restored until the middle of the twentieth century.

In May 1918, the 100th anniversary of the German politician, philosopher and economist Karl Marx, the street was renamed in his honor. Today it is the longest street in the city center. Here are concentrated monuments, temples, museums and cultural institutions. One of the attractions of the street is the building of the Noble Assembly - a fine example of classical architecture of the middle of the XIX century.
