Southeast Round Tower of the Kazan Kremlin
Description:
The South-East Round Tower is one of the 8 currently operating fortress towers of the Kazan Kremlin – the oldest architectural monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kremlin itself is located near the Kremlin embankment, in the center of Kazan and is considered a historical, archaeological pearl of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The 19-meter South-East Tower, built in the XVI century, originally did not have an upper tent, as it was built as a defensive structure. The tent was crowned only at the end of the twentieth century, during reconstruction. Now this tall white-stone beauty is an integral part of the glorious history of Kazan and Russia, as well as a classic example of Pskov architecture.
Inside, the South-East Tower is divided into 3 tiers, which are connected by a wooden staircase. After the reconstruction and strengthening of the tower, it became possible to climb from one tier to another and look at the city from the window-barriers. This can be done on any day, as the entrance to the territory of the Kazan Kremlin is free.
