"Let this cup pass away from me."
Description:
“Let this cup pass me” – these words we say, expressing the desire to avoid any trouble. But the Gospel says that Christ spoke them, anticipating his suffering and death. Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane: “My Father!” If it is possible, let this cup pass me; not as I will, but as you. This prayer of Christ confirms the truth that Christ combined in Himself two natures and two wills: the divine and the human. The Cyzic image of the Mother of God is one of those icons where the image of the Divine Infant already symbolically conveys the foreshadowing of future torments and the death of Christ on the cross. “The Lamb, doomed from birth to slaughter” – this is the deep meaning of such icons, especially common in the 17th century. In the Cytic image, the Mother of God, holding the Child on her left hand, put her right one on the table with the Cup standing on it. The child in fear strayed from the Cup, which symbolically reflects the words of the Gethsemane prayer of Christ: “My Father!” If possible, let this cup pass me.
