Kingisepp Museum of Local History

karl Marx Avenue, 1, Kingisepp, Leningrad Region, 188450

About the company:

The building of the museum is located in the historical center of the ancient city, which today is called Kingisepp. In the past, there was one of the Novgorod porous fortresses - the stone fortress of Yam, which in the XVIII century was rebuilt into an earthen bastion fortress of Yamburg. At present, earthen bastions and curtains are partially preserved on the territory of the fortress. On the former fortress yard there is a city park Summer Garden.

The history of the Kingisepp Museum begins on November 5, 1960, when the people’s museum was created by local activists, and the first exhibition dedicated to the history of the city opened in the district House of Culture. Six years later, the museum received the status of a state museum and became known as the Kingisepp Museum of Local History.

The collection of stock items is very diverse. The greatest interest are found in the study of burial mounds on the territory of the region, unique finds of the Middle Ages: household items, jewelry, weapons. In addition, the culture and traditions of the peoples living on the territory - Vodi, Izhor, Russians, Finns, Estonians, Germans - are represented by samples of weaving, folk embroidery, tools and household items. Of particular interest are Russian and Swedish coins of the XVI-XX centuries, glass and ceramic dishes created at the factories of the Yamburg county of the XIX-XX centuries.
