North Ossetia is one of the centers of mountain tourism and mountaineering.
Individual excursion to Fiagdon or Kurtatinsky gorge, Dargavs p., "the city of the Dead", Karmadon gorge, Giseldon gorge all this we will visit in one excursion.
Let’s take a closer look at where you and I are going: Each gorge of mountain Ossetia is endowed with its own unique beauty and uniqueness. The gorge of the Fiagdon River, or Kurtatinskoe, irrigated by the cold Fiagdon and its tributaries, is best known in Ossetia for its historical and cultural monuments. At the small village of Dzuarikau, located about halfway between Vladikavkaz and Alagir, the road turns towards the mountains and leads to the depths of a shady gorge framed by wooded ridges with green alpine meadows on the tops. It smoothly, without steep ascents and descents, draws us further and further, opening at each turn all new picturesque oaks, lawns and heaps of rocks and leads to the Kurtatyn gorge. The Kurtatin Gorge is one of the main centers of formation of the Ossetian people and its national culture since the early Middle Ages. Legend has it that the Courtatine Society was founded by two Alagir brothers, Kurt and Tag. The descendants of Tag moved to the neighboring gorges and founded the Tagaur Society there. As you move to the top, the road goes past overhanging gray-yellow rocks, on one of which a portrait of I.V. Stalin is painted in colors. After passing the overhanging rock massif, we meet with another of the small natural wonders. This place among the Ossetians is called Kadargavan. A few more turns of the road - and on the left bank there is a village Dzivgis, occupying an almost flat terrace between the river and the cliffs of the mountain Kariu-hoh. The first thing that catches the eye is the ruins of houses and towers, crowded in a small space. Only five or six houses are currently standing in Dzivgis. There are a lot of interesting things in Dzivgisa. Dzivgi fortress, of course, is one of the most powerful fortifications of Ossetia. And on the southern outskirts of the village at the very bank of the river there is an interesting cult complex "Dzivgisy Dzuar". Between Dzivgis and the town of Fiagdon, two monuments rise on a small hill: a slender handsome horse under a saddle lowered his head low, mourning his fallen rider and a bust of J.V. Stalin. A few kilometers from the town of Fiagdon, right by the road is the Alan monastery. Then we go to the highland part of our excursion to the village of Dargavs, where one of the largest "Cities of the Dead" in the North Caucasus is located. "City of the Dead"
- the most interesting monument of antiquity. These are burial structures - crypts. After seeing the sights of Dargavs, we go even higher to see the Carmodon gorge, known for the tragic events of September 20, 2002, the mudflow from the Kolka glacier buried about 120 people alive, including the film crew of Sergei Bodrov. Well, we will be able to look at the Karmadon gorge from a height and assess the full scale of what happened.
