The Fortress Museum was opened on May 9, 1965 and was originally a people’s museum. It was located in the buildings of the Kislovodsk fortress - a monument of history and architecture of federal significance, from which the resort of Kislovodsk began.
There are memorial plaques about the stay here of the architect S.I. Upton, A.S. Pushkin in 1820, about the placement of the evacuation hospital during the Great Patriotic War, about the opening of the infirmary for the lower ranks of the Caucasian Military District during the First World War, about the description of the fortress in the novel by M.Y. Lermontov “Hero of Our Time”.

The exposition tells about individual stages of the history of the peoples of the North Caucasus, research of mineral springs, the development of the Kislovodsk resort, the role of the Cossacks in the formation of the resort. A large section is devoted to Kislovodsk as the largest hospital base during the Great Patriotic War.
