Mysterious Cimmeria

The ancient Greeks called Cimmeria the northern regions of the Oikumena vaguely represented by them, in particular, the Northern Black Sea region and the Azov region (Cimmeria of Homer). Today, the name “Cimmeria” in the Crimea is, first of all, an artistic image of the Crimea of the legendary era, invented and glorified by the artist Maximilian Voloshin: “I call the eastern region of the Crimea Cimmeria from the ancient Sourozh (Sudak) to the Cimmerian Bosphorus (Kerch Strait), in contrast to Taurida, its western part of the southern coast and Tauride Chersonesus.” Here, in Koktebel, Feodosia, Old Crimea in the late XIX - early XX century lived and worked famous artists writers and poets - Voloshin himself, Green, Tsvetaeva, Akhmatova, Aivazovsky, Bogaevsky and others. The source of their inspiration, romanticism and imagination was the Black Sea, the surrounding steppes, hills and mountain teeth.
