Kondopoga City Museum of Local Lore

The museum was founded in 1984 on the basis of the Kondopoga Museum on a voluntary basis. The institution was opened to the public on 28.06.1984, on the day of the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Kondopoga from the Nazi invaders.

In 2009, the museum opened a historical and local history exposition “For the distance of time”. The materials of the exposition tell about the history of the lands of the Lopskoye parishes in Obone region of the XVII-XIX centuries, as well as the era of decisive transformations of the XX century. The exhibition covers events from the first ironworks of the Hamburg merchant Butenant von Rosenbusch, to the construction of the Kondopoga HPP and a factory for the production of newspaper paper.

The museum exposition consists of unique photographs, documents, newsreels of the 1920s, authentic items of the Kondopoga Museum and private collections. The visual feature of the local history exposition “Beyond the distance of time” is the use of museum equipment specially designed by the design firm “Artnavolok”.

In 2011, the exhibition “How the blacksmith Ilmallinne went to get married” began. The exhibition tells about the past and present of the culture of Karelian people. This is the final event of the project “Journey to the country of people”, which the museum carried out with the support of the charitable foundation of V. Potanin.

Exhibits of the exhibition cover more than a century - from the end of the XIX century to the present. These are objects of traditional occupations and life of Karelians from museum and other collections.

The museum conducts a large exhibition activity, offering visitors constantly changing exhibitions both from its funds and from the funds of other museums of Karelia, personal exhibitions of paintings, graphics, decorative and applied arts, photographs of artists and masters of Kondopoga, Karelia and other regions, as well as natural science collections.

Museum and educational activities of the museum under the program "I will know the world with the museum" covers students of all city schools, preschool institutions, institutions of additional education. A variety of interactive classes, excursions, master classes acquaint children with the history of their native land, contribute to the formation of a value attitude to cultural heritage and instill a taste for communication with museum values.
