Among the cities of the Kaluga region, Kozelsk is among the most ancient. It emerged in the early twelfth century. In the main building of the museum there is a repository of Optina exhibits and an exposition dedicated to the history of Optina Desert and the great Russian writers who have been there more than once: N.V. Gogol, L.N. Tolstoy, F.M. Dostoevsky; famous Slavophiles Kireevsky brothers are buried here. The city was especially famous for its heroic defense against Batu’s troops in 1238. On the central street of Kozelsk, an ancient 2-storey building (XIX century) - the estate of the merchant Tsypulin is especially distinguished by its architecture. In 1998, this building was transferred to the Kozel Museum of Local Lore. After the restoration in February 2006, the first hall was opened, which presents a diorama dedicated to the events of 1238 - a large battle canvas, which captures the most tragic moment of the Battle of Kozel.
