The museum was founded in 1919 by the first professional artist from the Mari people Alexander Vladimirovich Grigoriev. Thanks to Grigoriev, the museum contains unique paintings of great Russian artists of the 18th and 20th centuries (Aivazovsky, Polenov, Korovina brothers, Feshin, Klever, Sudkovsky, Torozhnikov, etc.). There is an exposition of history, porcelain (Russian, Western European and Eastern masters). Since 1983, an open-air ethnographic museum has been opened, telling about the culture and life of the small mountain Mari people. In 1995, the Museum of Merchant Life was opened. It contains exhibits of the late 19th and early 20th centuries belonging to merchants of the city. Kozmodemyansk was the prototype of the city of Vasyuki in the novel “12 chairs” in this regard, in 1995, the Bender Museum of Humor was opened. Since 2001, all the museums of the city have been merged into a single complex. |
