Krasnodar

Monument to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Kuban Cossack Army (1696-1896)

Russia, Krasnodar, St. Red

Description:

Krasnodar is a city with a colorful, rich history, inseparably connected with the Cossacks. In 1897, as a gift of the city to the Cossack army for its bicentenary, a monument was erected.

The development of the project of the monument was carried out by the Kuban architect V.A. Filippov. By the very celebration of the bicentenary in October 1896, the obelisk did not have time to make, so its grand opening took place in the summer of 1897. At that time, Cossacks came to Ekaterinodar from all over the Kuban. The obelisk was not just a monument, but a symbol connecting many generations of Cossacks from all over Russia.

The monument is about fourteen meters high, on top is crowned with a double-headed eagle and a gilded ball. On four sides are attached cast iron slabs with beautiful embossing.

Like most monuments of the tsarist era, this one could not easily survive the arrival of Soviet power. First, the double-headed eagle disappeared from it, and in the 30s of the XX century it was completely dismantled.

Only many years later, in 1996, now in honor of the celebration of the three hundredth anniversary of the Cossack army, the monument was completely restored in its original form under the leadership of A.A. Apollonov.
