Kronstadt

Anchor Square

Russia, St. Petersburg, Kronstadt district

Description:

The anchor square is located in the city of Kronstadt, which currently forms the Kronstadt district of St. Petersburg. The square got its name from the warehouse of anchors and anchor chains, which was here until the end of the XIX century.

In 1861, a stone wall was built separating the square from the Kronstadt Admiralty. For a time, the square was known as the “Divorcement Square”, and after the revolution was renamed the Square of the Victims of the Revolution. The main attraction of the square is the Sea Cathedral, built in 1913 and consecrated in the presence of Emperor Nicholas II. The 75-meter temple is visible from almost any shore of the Gulf of Finland. Currently, the cathedral is reopened after a long restoration.

On the square there is a monument to Admiral Makarov, who died heroically in the Russo-Japanese War. There is also a mass grave of those who died during the Revolution and the subsequent Civil War.

An interesting feature of the square is the only cast iron pavement in Russia. In the immediate vicinity of Anchor Square is the Summer Garden and the Kronstadt Admiralty.
