The Temple of the Assumption of the Virgin

ooh Antokolski, 12, Kursk

Description:

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin is the main Catholic church in Kursk. It was built at the request of the Kursk Catholic community in 1859. At that time, the community already consisted of several thousand people who were forced to attend service in a modest house of prayer. Despite this, construction permits for a long time could not be obtained due to the lack of a suitable plot of land. Today the temple is located on Antokolsky Street.

The temple of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God was built in neo-Gothic style. It is crowned by two classical towers with 27 gilded crosses. Initially, the temple was richly decorated with mosaics, but today almost nothing remains of it during the Soviet oppression. The temple was closed for some time in 1938 after the arrest of the abbot. During the war, a bomb hit one of the towers and almost the entire eastern facade was destroyed. The restoration continued until the early 90s, when the temple was returned to the Catholic community.

In 2006, the 110th anniversary of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin was solemnly celebrated. As a gift, a project was created according to which a large clock will be placed on the western facade of the temple. An organ is installed inside the temple and regular concerts are organized.
