Description:

One of the oldest museums in Siberia and the Far East, founded in 1890. Until the 20s of the XX century - the only research institution on the territory of modern Buryatia. The activities of the museum were closely connected with scientists - researchers of Central Asia G.N. and A.V. Potanin, P.K. Kozlov, V.D. Obruchev and local enthusiasts of local history - Yu.D. Talko-Gryntsevich, P.S. Mikhno, etc., which allowed to open a stationary exhibition "Russian geographical discoveries in Central Asia". The Kyakhta Museum is a center of archaeological research on the problems of Xiongnu. The museum has collections: zoological, ethnographic, ornithological. The herbarium of the museum served as the basis for 8 issues of "Flora Transbaikalia". A rare book collection is of great cultural importance.
