Lower Park in Lipetsk

d. Lipetsk, Petrovsky Passage, 2

Description:

Lower Park is one of the most favorite places of rest for residents of Lipetsk. This is the largest city park, which is very popular. The park owes its creation to Emperor Peter the Great, who during a stop in Lipetsk in the midst of the Azov campaigns discovered healing springs.

One day, walking along the Lipovka river together with Admiral I.A. Senyavin, at the foot of the hill, Pyotr Alekseevich saw a transparent spring, beating from the ground. Since he lived abroad for many years and had an excellent idea of the beneficial properties of mineral waters and European resorts, he suggested that the discovered spring water may have healing properties. By order of Peter the First, a well with an oak log was built on the site of the spring.

For a long time, Russian resorts were less popular than European ones, but after the French Revolution and the war with Napoleon, travel abroad became limited. It was at this point that the rapid development of the Lipetsk resort began. Since the XIX century it is a favorite place of rest and walks. Nowadays, the park has two dozen attractions, more than 50 species of trees and shrubs grow, including centuries-old oaks and linden trees.
