Aviators' Square
aviators Square, Lipetsk, Lipetsk Region 398000, Russian Federation
Description:
Aviators Square is one of the many squares of Lipetsk, located at the intersection of Cosmonauts and Gagarin streets. It was founded in 1968 and was originally called differently - in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Komsomol. A year after the formation of the square, a monument dedicated to the heroes-aviators was erected in its center.
The monument to aviators was created according to the project of the Lipetsk architect N.R. Polunin. The composition is an aircraft mounted on a high pedestal. It is as if he were flying into the sky, leaving behind a plume of smoke. In 1992, the square was renamed Aviator Square.
In the summer of 2003, when the city celebrated its 300th anniversary, a new monument dedicated to the dead pilots of the Lipetsk Aviation Center was solemnly opened next to the monument to aviators. At the cost of their lives in the winter of 1968, they managed to steal a burning plane from residential areas and save many lives.
