Walk through Oranienbaum (Lomonosov)
Description:
As part of the excursion program, you will see the Oranienbaum Palace and Park Ensemble:
- The Great Menshikov Palace, where the first governor of St. Petersburg hosted Peter the Great and Peter the Second, and Peter the Third signed the abdication. Tickets and excursions in the palace are paid separately.
- The precious “toy” of Catherine II is the Chinese Palace, in which in 1774 the Empress celebrated the victory in the Russian-Turkish war. There is a world-famous masterpiece – a glass cabinet, and next to the palace there is a stone bench carved for Grand Duchess Ekaterina Alekseevna, on which anyone can sit today.
- The pavilion of the Catalan Hill is the progenitor of modern attractions, which in America are rightly called “Russian slides”. A unique structure that amazed contemporaries with equipment, decoration and scale, skating from which even in the modern sense was a real extreme.
- The Palace of Peter the Third and the Honorary Gate are the remains of the amusing fortress of Peterstadt, where Peter Fedorovich started numerous training battles, but he did not dare to give battle to the guards that rebelled against him.
- The pavilion "Stone Hall", in which the future Empress Catherine II arranged court holidays, and her august husband loved to play the violin.
- Picture house. The building housed an art gallery and library, a kunstkamera and an opera hall. The collection, assembled in the Picture Hall, became a vivid example of a private collection of works of art. In fact, it was the first House of Culture in tsarist Russia.
We will walk through the Lower and Upper Park, and against the background of this historical landscape, we talk about the history of the palace and park ensemble and its inhabitants.
