Oranienbauma Lower Garden

prosp. Palace, 48, Lomonosov, St. Petersburg, Russia

Description:

One of the first regular gardens in Russia is the Lower Garden of Oranienbaum, built in 1713-1727. It occupies 4.8 hectares and is an integral part of the palace and park complex.

The lower garden was created by the Swedish landscape master H. Graz and J. Eick. Its regularity is manifested in strict symmetry and clear geometric shapes of paths, flower beds and even tree crowns.

The whole area is permeated by axes of alleys. The main alley begins at the Grand Palace, leads to the gates of the park and ends with the sea channel. The garden is decorated with fountains, sculptures of the Italian sculptor and flower gardens. Here you can see the greenhouse, it was once grown exotic plants: pineapples, apricots, peaches and citrus fruits. Not far from the Orangerie is the Painting or Opera House, which kept about 400 paintings by Russian and Western European artists.

In the very center of the park, stalls with flower beds are broken, they are surrounded by bosquets, trellises, rows of lindens, firs and maples. Currently, the Lower Garden is being restored as a monument-museum of garden art.
