Maykop

Mount Ashten

Russia, Republic of Adygea

Description:

On a clear day from the capital of Adygea, Maykop, you can see a mighty mountain peak covered with eternal ice far in the south. This is Mount Oshten - one of the peaks of the Fisht-Oshten ridge. The height of this mountain is two thousand eight hundred meters. Shared with Mount Fisht by a deep gorge, Mount Oshten attracts Russian and foreign tourists who want to feel the harsh but majestic beauty of its mountain landscapes.

The name of the mountain in translation from Adyghe means “eternal snow”. Indeed, the mountain is notable for its glaciers, which are located below and west of all other glaciers of the Caucasus. It was also called “the mountain where the axe is dropped” because of the inaccessibility of its peaks. From the north and south, the mountain is surrounded by tourist routes. There is something to see here - the northern side of the mountain rises with huge stone ridges. And on the southern slopes of Oshten, in addition to mountain beauty, you can find Caucasian chamois. These graceful animals in small herds move from the rock to the rock.
