Caucasian Biosphere Reserve
Russia, Agydea Republic and Krasnodar Territory
Description:
The Caucasian Biosphere Reserve is one of the first Russian reserves. Initially, the lands on which it is located were used as hunting grounds for the Grand Dukes, but already at that time there were talks about the need to preserve the herd of bison and create a reserve. These plans were implemented only under the Soviet regime - the reserve was founded in 1924 in the mountains of the Western Caucasus.
The Caucasian Reserve is the largest in Europe, on its area of two hundred and eighty thousand hectares, unique ecosystems of mountains and foothills are preserved. More than half of the reserve is covered with untouched forest, alpine meadows and glacial landscapes are represented in it. More than three thousand species of plants grow in the reserve, including such relict trees as yew and boxwood. The special pride of the reserve is the fir forests. The animal kingdom is also extremely diverse. Here the populations of the Kuban tour and the Caucasian noble deer, bears, lynxes and of course bison are preserved.
Tours around the reserve are organized for tourists. You can visit the aviary complex for wild animals, walk along the relict Khostinskaya Tisosamshite grove, explore the picturesque mountain gorge of the Devil's Gate.
