St. Michael Monastery
Russia, Republic of Adygea, Maikop district, Pobeda settlement
Description:
At the foot of Mount Fiziabgo stands St. Michael's Monastery. The history of this place began in the late nineteenth century, when the war in the Caucasus ended. The monastery was built on the granted Cossack lands by the efforts of Hieromonk Martyri, who came here from Athos. Together with him came the first monks, who gave the monastery its second name - Mikhailovo-Athonite.
Five temples were built in the monastery. The most significant and the largest was the Assumption. And on top of Mount Physiabgo stood the Transfiguration Church, whose golden domes. Sparkling in the sun could be seen for miles. The monastery became the religious center of the region, a year it was visited by more than one hundred thousand pilgrims.
With the establishment of Soviet power in Adygea, the monastery was dissolved, and after the war all its temples were destroyed. For a long time there was a tourist base "Romantics". Only since 2003 began the process of restoration of the monastery. The Trinity Church was rebuilt, the temple in the name of Archistratig Michael was restored.
Today, the monastery is visited by many pilgrims who want to taste the waters from the famous healing spring on Mount Fiziabgo, and tourists are attracted by the opportunity to explore the cave cells and the underground chapel at the monastery.
