Monk Falls
Russia, Republic of Adygea, Maikop district
Description:
Guam Gorge is a unique natural monument of Adygea. This is a powerful canyon with stone walls reaching a three-hundred-meter height, the stormy Kurjips river runs along the bottom of the gorge. The gorge stretches a broken line between the villages of Guamka and Mezmay.
Once in the Guam Gorge, be sure to visit the Monk Cave with the waterfall that flows from it. The most beautiful waterfall with a scattering of countless sprays breaks off the walls of the gorge, falling from a multimeter height. The waterfall can be admired from the bottom of the gorge, and you can climb to its source along a trail that begins near the Cosmonauts’ House – a small cafe in the center of the Guam Gorge.
The trail approaches the waterfall itself, from where you can climb to the Monk Cave. From the depths of the grotto flows an ice stream, breaking off a waterfall in the gorge. According to legend, a hermit monk once lived in this cave. It is difficult to believe this - the cave is damp, and difficult to pass. Several semi-flooded halls are connected by narrow passages that cannot be passed without getting wet.
